The Alchemists Forum’s chair, Alan Branagh has spent many years coaching, mentoring and offering advice to a diverse range of business owners and CEOs worldwide. Although their industries and specialisms differ, a constant in the lives of many business leaders is the daily ‘headaches’ and doubts that tend to resurface and raise their unwelcomed heads.

Alan has outlined below his top five ‘headaches’ felt by Business Owners & CEOs and offers his advice on how to banish negativity, lead effectively and ultimately build a successful, enduring company.

Do you recognise any of these headaches?

Looking beyond the numbers, why am I doing this every day?

Feeling the pressure and occasionally letting it get to you is inevitable for many business leaders. This often results in business owners and CEOs questioning themselves and their business – is it worth the stress? Is it worth my energy?

It’s vital that business leaders in this position take a step back, gather their thoughts and take time to remember what it was that made them fall in love with their business. Once this nugget is found, don’t let it go and allow it to be your motivation each day!

Am I good enough to lead this business?

It isn’t uncommon for business leaders to feel anxious and worry about their leadership competency. To ensure you’re leading your team in the best way possible, it’s vital that you have a team of advisors who walk in the same shoes!

All business owners and leaders should have the wisdom of a trusted personal board of directors. These are your confidants – the trusted people you can turn to for advice and guidance day or night. As your inner circle they give you wisdom and advice that your board, your social friends or your consultants just can’t give you.

I feel like I am spread so thin – how do I make more time for ME?

Most business owners are quick to fall into the trap of spending too much time working within their business and taking on responsibility after responsibility. Although this may sound like the obvious way to grow your business, it is in fact the opposite!

Taking time out to work on your business rather than in your business will improve your performance, boost your creativity and encourage growth and profitability. It is also essential that you practice a healthy work – life balance so you can be the best version of yourself for your team!

This business is all ME - How do I build the business beyond me?

To build a business culture that engages the whole company and sees beyond you and your wants and needs, it’s important to spend time working on your business objectives.

Use your objectives to gain clarity of your vision and strategic direction. Learn about new ways of doing things, get honest feedback from your team on new ideas and workplace initiatives and plan for the growth of both your company and those who work within.

How do I build a team I can trust?

You face a big problem in your business if your team is not aligned and not working as one being or one voice, it is essential that you build a team you can trust. To do this you must see beyond the ‘top ranks’ and encourage the ideas, opinions and thoughts of your whole team.

By doing this you’re showing your team that each voice is valued and appreciated within the wider business network and through this, personal accountability and trust will quickly begin to grow and your team will flourish!
