When You Can Feel the Storm Coming and Don't Know What It Will Be

You can feel it before you can explain it.

Your business is busy. Customers are buying, your people are working hard and the numbers may look perfectly respectable. Nothing is obviously wrong. Yet you know your own business, and you know when the effort going in is no longer producing quite the movement it once did.

Growth is harder won. Things take longer. Decisions that used to feel reasonably straightforward somehow don't any more. So you push a little harder. Most of us would. And still there is that nagging feeling that you are running harder simply to stay where you are.

It feels like a plateau.

Perhaps, in more settled times, you would be less concerned. Businesses have periods like this. You have probably been through a few of them and found your way through.

Except this time you can feel a storm coming in your blood

You just don't know what it is.

You cannot quite point to it. You cannot put a date on it. You certainly cannot tell your people exactly what it will mean. Yet something in you says that the world your business is operating in is shifting.

Geopolitics can change in a weekend. Technology is moving at a pace few businesses can comfortably absorb. AI seems to offer extraordinary possibilities while raising questions nobody can yet answer with much certainty. Your customers are trying to make sense of it too, and so are your people.

Meanwhile, you still have a business to run. Your board wants to know what you think. Your senior team needs to know where you are going. Your people quite reasonably want to know what it might mean for them.

Sooner or later, it comes back to you. What are we going to do?

There is certainly no shortage of answers. Every day brings another forecast, report, expert opinion or confident prediction about what is coming next. Some will be right. Quite a few won't.

You still have to decide.

When progress slows, our instinct is usually to do more. Sell harder, push harder, get everyone focused and go again. There are times when that is exactly the right thing to do. There are also times when you can work extremely hard at yesterday's answer while the question itself has changed.

The questions being asked of you are becoming greater than the decisions you have had to make before

Do you invest or wait? What does AI really change for your business? What should you protect? What should you stop? What are you quietly assuming will return to normal when perhaps it won't?

Nobody can tell you exactly where the storm will land, and you cannot sit still until somebody does. You still have to decide what matters now.

When you are the person carrying that responsibility, there are times when you need somewhere to step outside the noise, say what you are really thinking and see the decision more clearly. Not somebody to tell you what to do. Somewhere to work out what you are going to do.

Are you going through a difficult period in a game you already understand? Or has the game changed?

When the pressure is high. When the game has changed. When the next decisions matter.
